  10. HOW DOES A CORPORATE COMEDIAN GET STARTED?

    Nearly every successful corporate comedian came from the world of standup comedy. Keep in mind there is a difference between a humorist and a comedian. A humorist is generally light and witty. A comedian is more about getting big laughs. Every comic starts off their career with the same goal. To be as funny as we can as quickly as we can. At a certain point, we start to move into better venues. After about 2 years, I was a regular at Catch a Rising Star, The Original Improv, The Comedy Cellar, Dangerfield’s, The Comic Strip, and Caroline’s On Broadway.These were the meccas of comedy in New York City with smart crowds and great comics.

    I also toured the country which helped me understand different audience demographics. And I opened for comics like Jerry Seinfeld, Paul Reiser, and Tim Allen. In fact, a year into my career, Seinfeld came up to me and said, “You’re a very good writer.” I thanked him and he said, “I don’t say that to everyone.” So, I have always taken pride in being able to write clean, funny, and clever material from the beginning. So, if an audience is tired or worn out, I’m ready to perk them up. If the audience is celebrating something, I’m able to take them up even higher. And I look at technical issues as an opportunity rather than a problem. One time, I was performing on a large boat for about 50 people when the sound system suddenly went out. I quickly grabbed the back of the room boat mic and the laughs got even bigger due to the absurdity of the situation.

PS. The only company that didn’t grow after my humorous motivational speech was Coca Cola. They got rid of their classic coke and started new coke because of me. However, I never told them to do that. I had simply made an offhand comment that I was thirsty during my speech and asked if someone could grab me a Pepsi.
